On and Off Camera Lighting Tutorial

28 August, 2008 - 6:00pm

K17 seminar room

Do you ever wonder how studio fashion photographs get that studio look or why product photos from the big electronics manufacturers look so much better than the snaps you see up on eBay? One thing that sets the professionals apart from the others is the ability to think about and control light. Join us as we explore the world of photographic lighting - how to think about light, the equipment we can use and how we can incorporate the ideas behind photographic lighting into our general photography. Along the way we'll also learn how to take photos that we admire and deconstruct them in order to learn how to use light in a similar way in our own creations.

You don't need the most expensive equipment or a studio to participate - photons behave the same way in front of a studio camera as they do in front of a point-and-shoot and we will be covering techniques that may be used regardless of the camera. However, if you have a DSLR or a point-and-shoot with a flash hotshoe, please bring it along as some of the techniques also involve the use of battery powered strobes (also known as "camera flashes" or "flashguns"). Also feel free to bring any portable off camera lighting equipment you might want to try or show such as battery powered strobes (especially if they use the Sony/Minolta, Nikon CLS or Canon wireless flash systems) or wireless radio flash triggers.

We will also be holding a brief introduction to camera theory in the first 20 minutes or so of this tutorial so don't worry if you're not familiar with the terms or theory behind photography or if you just need a bit of a memory refresh.

Hi, I'm interested in coming along (though I might arrive a bit late). I'll stay posted!

Off camera flash ... just what I needed :P Who is the "tutor" ? I'll be there for sure ( if nth comes up )

-Zhong-

Heya Zhong.
The tutor is going to be Raymond.
Don't miss out on this one! =D

Ed's in!

coming~

sounds interesting .~
but i was wondering would that be alrite if i don't even have a camera with me atm....?

I'm not exec but why not ? I mean it's just a tutorial ... we're just learning. You can always apply at home the next time u use your camera :) Of coz it will be nice to have a camera on the day so you can have hands on ... but if you don't have it's okay too ... or juz leech a camera off the person sitting next to you

Hi Future.
Exactly as Zhong said, there'll be no issues if you don't have a camera on you on the night. I'm sure the other friendly photoclubers will let you experiment with theirs!
It'll definitely be a great learning session too.
See you then!

It's this Thursday!

Hi all,

Just a reminder, this tutorial is being held this Thursday at 6pm in the K17 seminar room. Don't worry if you don't have an SLR to bring - I'll be going through a lot of things that apply equally to any camera you might use.

In fact, I plan on running about half the practical part of the tutorial with a Canon A620 point-and-shoot camera (standard point-and-shoot with manual modes).

The tutorial itself will consist of about 20 minutes of intro to photography followed by about an hour on photographic lighting. I'll also bring some portable lighting equipment that you might use out in the field so you can have a bit of a play.

Hope to see you there! :-)

- Raymond

Maybe starting a little late ...

Hi all,

I've just been informed that the seminar in our room prior to us might run a little bit overtime so our start time might get pushed back to 6.15-6.30.

The seminar before ours is on open source hardware and physical computing - a very interesting topic so you're welcome to show up to that as well! :-)
